Dear friends,
My god, it’s happened, I’ve started a Substack. I’ve also moved to Providence and finally put enough plants and lamps everywhere for my new apartment to feel like a home.
I’m relieved to be back in a city, one with creative energy and D.I.Y. effervescence, after three unexpected pandemic years in Newport (a beautiful, odd, and surreal place that I insisted on calling a city for way too long). There were no women with short hair in Newport. I kid you not. I ultimately had to leave just so I could get regular haircuts again.
I’m embracing change and transformation and new adventures this month. You’re getting this email, my very first post, because you opted into my mailing list. I hope you’ll stick around as I discover how to make good, interesting, and generous things happen through this platform. I want to write transparently about sustaining a life in the arts. I’m calling it a travelogue.
This is a free newsletter, but if you’d like to go the extra mile in supporting me, there are some paid subscription options, and I’ll be full of gratitude towards you for helping to support this project and my work.

FRESH OFF THE PRESS!
The Montag play script and Supplements: Impossibilities are now published by Soho Rep. You can get them online at their shop, or the next time you see a play at their theatre.
MONTAG IS GOING TO GERMANY
Playing at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, opening September 29, 2023. Directed by Lily Sykes, translated by Cornelia Enger.
The European system of theatre-making is utterly new to me. Apparently you’ll be able to see this run of Montag one to five times per month for one to three years, depending on how ticket sales go. It’s also in a 350-seat house, which is a wild next step for a piece last seen in a 67-seat theater. How will this intimate epic feel in that kind of space? How will I feel when I go see my play about the place I grew up in, translated into German, in the place I grew up in? More reports from the other side of the looking-glass forthcoming. Currently working on finishing my rewrites.
WRITING EXERCISE
Write a makeover scene that’s not about becoming more beautiful. 3-5 pages for the first draft.
yours,
Kate
